We hate unnecessary plastic! Single-Use Plastic is a massive contributor to worldwide climate emergency and pollution. Businesses have such a massive role to play in keeping the planet clean; a responsibility that we have been working hard to acknowledge and work on! We have a number of methods that we use to try to limit our impact on the environment that extend beyond avoiding single-use plastic…
Regular visitors to our stores will recognise our signature Paper Bags! We were early adopters of paper and jute bags many years ago, and love seeing our customers carrying their purchases off in our strong recycled paper bags. We get lots of comments about how nice it is to be offered a paper bag, from our customers. The fact that there is no charge for our bags is even better. We love to hear about our bags being reused or repurposed after our customers are done with them; into the compost is our favourite! Our bags are designed to be very sturdy, so you won’t need to worry about the bags breaking even with the heaviest of purchases in them.
Some very small purchases may be sometimes be placed in one of small branded non-paper bags in our Abraxas Cookshop and Abraxas Garden Room stores, but rest assured these bags are fully biodegradable and made from recycled materials too.
We reuse packing and packaging from our supplier deliveries within our stores, and website deliveries to ensure that any single-use materials are put to reuse to minimise their impact on the environment. Excess delivery supplies from the shop floor are sent to our office to be utilised within the website dispatch team. So, you can rest assured that any orders from our website are treated with the same environmental commitment as purchases within our stores! Many of our suppliers have adopted recycled packaging within our deliveries, so reutilising these supplies further decreases the environmental impact of our and our suppliers’ operations.
In all of our stores, we try our best to wrap products in recycled paper at the counter for customers, and only use bubble-wrap where entirely essential for the protection of items. Regular visitors will remember the stacks of white paper on our counters, to wrap purchases in!
All of our stores are fitted with recycling facilities for any excess carboard, paper or other recyclable waste. Whilst recycling should be a last resort, we think it’s important that we should be doing everything we can to avoid landfill waste and unnecessary pollution. We receive large deliveries and reduce the amount of waste produced on each item by purchasing in bulk to prevent small shipments and their impact on the environment.
In all of our Abraxas Cookshop stores, we offer a customer WEEE recycling scheme, where we will recycle electrical items (on a like-for-like) basis when a new item is purchased. This scheme includes Toasters, Kettles, Blenders, Food Processors and other electrical items too! Simply, bring your item in with you when purchasing your new electrical product, or drop it off within two weeks of your new purchase and we will take care of the rest.
Finally, any items which are damaged or otherwise not up to our high standards on delivery, are reduced down and placed on the shop floor for sale, to avoid any waste on functional (but not perfect) saleable products – so keep your eyes open for a bargain on your next visit!
We think it’s really important to buy well and buy once, so we work hard to ensure that all of our products are excellent quality and built to last longer, and even for life! Buying better quality will not only mean that you can cook, bake and make much easier, quicker and more deliciously, but it also means that you won’t need to replace items and throw out your old item thus creating less waste on an individual basis.
Many of our products come with a 5-year, 10-year, 15-year or even lifetime guarantee so that you can be sure that whatever you are buying is great quality and designed to last longer, to prevent having to rebuy items in a year or two.
We go to great lengths to select suppliers who create stylish, high quality and long-lasting products, but who have the environment in mind. LeCreuset, GoodTooBee, LockNLock, Smidge, Chillys, St. Eval and Dexam are just a few to name, but there’s plenty more too!
We are committed to ensuring that our business doesn’t have a negative impact on the environment or our beautiful local area, so we are continuously seeking new environmentally friendly products, suppliers and processes to reduce the amount of waste we produce, and the impact that we have.
If you have any suggestions for how we can improve, we’d love to hear them! Let a member of staff know in your local store, or drop us an email at Online@AbraxasCookshop.com.
